| In the book of The Analects of Confucius,due to the special status of Confucius and Nanzi,as well as the vague historical records,the chapter of "Confucius met with Nanzi"(“子见南子”)is particularly eye-catching in the history of interpretation of The Analects of Confucius.The study of The Analects of Confucius is one of the core studies of Confucianism in East Asia.From the perspective of The Analects of Confucianism in East Asia,it is helpful to understand the related issues of Confucianism interpretation history in East Asia by taking a holistic view of the interpretation history of "Confucius met with Nanzi" in ancient Korea and sorting out the characteristics and differences of the interpretation history of "Confucius met with Nanzi" in ancient China and Korea.The interpretation of "Confucius met with Nanzi" in ancient Korea focuses on the period of the Chosun Dynasty(1392-1910).Li Huang and Li Er mainly interpreted the Analects of Confucius by translating in the initial period of the interpretation history.Later Song Shilie and Li Weitai,though occasionally put forward their original ideas,generally did not depart from the scope of Zhuxi’s notes.By the middle of Chosun Dynasty,scholars such as Li Zai and Li Yi frequently put forward new opinions on related issues,and scholars such as Cui Zuohai and Ding Ruoyong also elaborated brilliant views.At the end of the Chosun Dynasty,the interpretation of "Confucius met with Nanzi" returned to the field of Zhuxi’s theory.In addition to the basic academic basis of Zhuxi’s theory,there is a unique phenomenon in Chosun Dynasty’s interpretation of "Confucius met with Nanzi":focusing on the”image of the saint" and finally defending Confucius.Previous scholars generally claimed that Confucius’virtue is reflected in his integrity when meeting with Nanzi,while the scholars of Chosun Dynasty advocated that it should be embodied in whether Confucius intended to save the Wei-state from crisis.By deliberately misplacing the situation,the scholars of Chosun Dynasty set the historical background of "Confucius met with Nanzi”in a turbulent period of Wei-state,and materialized "promoting Dao" into saving the Wei-state from the crisis,which is different from the abstract interpretation of China.Cui Zuohai and Ding Ruoyong are two scholars who interpreted "Confucius met with Nanzi" prominently.Cui Zuohai elucidated "the spirit of the saint to cherish all the individuals",Ding Ruoyong made a textual research on the ancient "five kinds of etiquette" one by one to prove the rationality of Confucius’s meeting with Nanzi.What they really care about is not the issue of etiquette that has been debated by the predecessors.Their basic starting point is to make fact judgment serve moral judgment by reconstructing the context from the perspective of politics.The purpose of interpretation ultimately points to the political ideal of loyalty and patriotism.In the mid-term of Chosun Dynasty,political persecution against Confucians occurred frequently.The moral spirit handed down through the misfortunes is projected on the interpretation of classics by Confucians.By exploring the political implications of "saving the nation" in the text,it is expected to restore the social function of primitive Confucianism and rectify the social ethical order.Unlike ancient Korea,the interpretation of "Confucius met with Nanzi" in China spans two thousand years.The image of Confucius in Qin and Han Dynasties was disturbed by rumors.In Wei and Jin Dynasties,the fatalism of metaphysics was used to explain "Confucius met with Nanzi".Zhu Xi of Song Dynasty emphasized the sage’s original intentions are supposed to be highly valued.Among the scholars of Qing Dynasty,Mao Qiling’s textual research was the most rigorous.The differences in the interpretation history of "Confucius met with Nanzi" in ancient China and Korea are,from a small point of view,the differences in interpretation methods,views on the saint and the subjectivity of interpreters.From a large point of view,they are guided by historical background,political culture and national character.By means of concentrating on the interpretation of ancient events and misplacing situations,the scholars of Chosun Dynasty eventually considered both the validity and the diversity of interpretation to make the text coherent.Under the circumstances of internal and external troubles,the interpretation of"Confucius met with Nanzi" has been entrusted with the political implication of national stability and prosperity,in order to seek the revitalization of Confucian moral values.In this regard,there is a remarkable commonality in the history of interpretation of Confucianism in East Asia,which takes interpretation of text as its orientation and orientation of conveying truth as its purpose. |
