There are some high vowels with a sense of friction in Chinese dialects, which are commonly called frictional vowels in academic circles.Frictional vowels refer to the obstructive feature of producing an almost frictive in the front of the tongue or in the lip when the vocal organs are modulating vowels, which is a widespread phenomenon in northern Wu dialect and Jianghuai Mandarin areas. This article will focus on the frictional properties of high vowels in Suzhou,Danyang,Yangzhou dialects.Suzhou dialect had always been regarded as the representatives of Wu dialect.Danyang lies at the junction of Jianghuai Mandarin and Wu dialect.Yangzhou dialect is a typical Jianghuai Mandarin. The three dialects show the chain geographical distribution characteristic of Jianghuai Mandarin and Wu dialect. This article mainly uses the general method of acoustic experiment and formant and spectrum as the basic clue to descript and analyse the frictional properties and 'variability of high vowels,by calculating parameters such as the formant frequency, formant bandwidth, spectrum moment, spectrum of discrete cosine transform, eombined with statistical modeling method. The main results of experiment are as follows:1)The higher the tongue position of high vowels, the stronger the friction is2)The friction property of high vowels is reflected in the energy enhancement of high frequency band.In other words, the higher the friction degree of high vowels,he higher the energy of high frequency band.3)The higher the friction degree of high vowels, the bigger its center of gravity is,and the rule of skewness is the opposite.4)The higher the friction degree of high vowels[i][u][y],the stronger the social variability.5)[y]and[(?)]are the same phoneme variant in Danyang and Suzhou dialects.6)In Suzhou dialect, the strong friction[yzj]and[v]have the characteristic of throat voice.
