| "East of Eden" was published in 1952.It is an important long-form novel in the later period of American modern writer John Steinbeck.It describes the background of the American Civil War to the end of the First World War for half a century.Under the three generations of Trask and Hamilton,the fate of the three generations rises and falls.The symbolism and realism of the work are alternately applied.The image shows the contrast between the small human beings and the grand historical reality.It tries to embody the struggle between human goodness and evil,and conveys John Steinbeck’s view of good and evil and human self-selection.Steinbeck has creatively dispelled the grand narrative in The East of Eden and is actively working on the establishment of a modern pluralistic narrative paradigm.Based on the close reading of the text,this thesis will carefully analyze the character and theme of the characters,combine Steinbeck’s literary style and creative principles,grasp the background of the literary era,and analyze the creative disintegration of the grand narrative of Eden East and a new narrative reconstruction of the modern pluralism.The main body of the thesis is divided into four chapters:The first chapter explains the creative disintegration of the grand narrative from the text of "East of Eden" from the three aspects of war,love and American dream.The second chapter analyzes Bakhtin’s polyphonic theory and points out the reconstruction of multiple narratives such as salvation theme,spiritual growth theme,ecological theme and narrative perspective.The third chapter probes into the theme of freedom and love contained in the works,and points out the aggregation of "East of Eden".The fourth chapter returns to the era where the author’s works are located to elucidate the background and significance of the narrative art exploration of "East of Eden". |
