William Blake,an artist who combined artistry and literariness at the end of 18 th century and the beginning of 19 th century in England.Although his unique artistic style kept him away from the mainstream research and study in art history,his art reflected the artistic atmosphere and even social situation in England of that time.He can't be categorized or imitated.In Blake 's arts,he used to depict distorted body images.Some of them became schemata,which he used frequently in his works.This thesis focuses on Blake's artistic achievements,based on his uses of body schema images,and aims at sorting out the source of these body schemas.Taking The Book of Urizen as an example,the thesis focus on the front sitting character schema which leaning forward with legs and crouching and the viewer only can capture the head,legs and feet.As one of the most frequently used body schema,it runs through the evolution of Blake's creation,and also shows the turning influence of The Book of Urizen.From this schema,the thesis will discover the uses of the image and the corresponding text,focus on Urizen character which is most frequently used and close to the schema,tease out its metaphor's development in the Blake's system,to find out the meaning of not only between images and image with text,excavate the social status and metaphors behind the image symbol of literary creation.Using traditional Iconography study method,the thesis will combine with the new method of the visual culture and historical research on the schema,to restore more complete Blake's art.At the same time,through the art of literariness to strengthen the links of artist and the environment of history.
