| Jin Ge,a well-known contemporary Korean-Chinese writer, was born in 1965 and is a veritable and prolific writer. His creative works involve novels, poems, essays, biographies and other subjects. With the reform and opening up and the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea, more and more Korean-Chinese have left their hometowns and havegone to cities or overseas to find new ways of life. However, life in other places is not smooth. With the longing for the city,Korean-Chinese who broke into the city unpreparedly are difficult to adapt to the city’s culture immediately, and some even lose themselves in the city.Out of a sense of the nation’s historical mission,Jin Ge began to pay attention to the various issues facing the Korean-Chinese community and created a series of novels on the theme of the Korean-Chinese.The novel of "Women in Juzi Street" vividly depicts the tortuousness and hardship of the Korean-Chinese women working in the cities. Before Jin Ge created novels on the theme of the Korean-Chinese,his novel is expressing personal emotions or trying various creative techniques. But later novels use the previous literary creation foundation to internalize the problems faced by the Korean-Chinese community in literary works, and use the power of words to sound the alarm for Korean-Chinese society.By creating novels for the Korean-Chinese to work in cities and to return home, herevealed many practical problems in the 21st century Korean-Chinese society in China, such as the collapse of traditional ethics and morals, the fall of humanity, the supremacy of money, urban employment,left-behind children, and the crisis of the rural Korean-Chinese community caused by alarge number of departures. This thesis focuses on a series of novels created on the theme of Korean-Chinese and the novel of the "Women in Juzi Street".Before the reform and opening up,Korean-Chinese was a farming ethnic group mainly concentrated in the northeast region of China. After the reform and opening up,in order to seek new outlets and opportunities,Korean-Chinese have left the countryside. As the Korean-Chinese’s living space continues to expand to cities and overseas, the social problems they face also arise. It can be said that many problems in contemporary Korean-Chinese society are inseparably related to spatial changes. This thesis will use the space theory to analyze the rural space, the urban space and the space of South Korea in the novel. This thesis will draw on Lefebvre’s theoretical model of physical, spiritual, and social space in "The Production of Space" to discuss the rural space, the urban space and the space of South Korea in Jin Ge’s novels.Starting from analyzing the spatial narrative and meaning of the novel, the problems existing in Korean-Chinese society, the spiritual world of the novel characters, and the author’s spatial awarenessThis thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the research purpose, research significance, research status, research objects and research methods of this thesis. The second chapter analyzes the rural space in Jin Ge’s novels. This chapter divides rural space into physical, social, and spiritual spaces, and discusses them separately.Rural’s physical space can be divided into the beautiful space in memory and the barren space in reality. The rural space of Jin Ge’s novel was created with the background of the countryside of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture of Jilin Province. It is difficult to find traces of modernization in the rural space in the memories, but a large number of off-farm phenomena and the invasion of capitalist culture have destroyed the original rural space. The author’s description of deserted farmland and agriculture, rundown villages and rural schools shows the true face of the countryside and indirectly reflects the crisis of the rural Korean-Chinese community The rural ’s social space can be divided into ill-conditioned space and the space of the sense of loss. With the development of the economy, the countryside became a place where farmers desperately wanted to escape. All those who remain in the countryside are the elderly or those with physical and mental illnesses. The rural space lost their vitality and strength due to the toss of young labor. The rural space is the hometown of the Korean-Chinese,which embodies the memory and history of the nation. However,as people gradually fled from their hometowns, national memories and traditional culture were gradually lost in the rural space. The rural’s spiritual space can be divided into the space of homing and homelessness, reflection and hope. The Korean-Chinese have a homing consciousness.Although wandering in another country, they have been thinking about the tenderness of their hometown and their families who stayed in their hometown.Because their roots are in the countryside, returning to their hometown is an inevitable choice for every expatriate.Homecoming can be seen as a root-seeking journey. After returning to the hometown, they saw the desolation of the countryside, and then they were trapped in a homeless state. They began to reflect on their choices and life, and re-searched for hope in reflection. In addition, the author also tried to propose a plan for the long-term development of the Korean-Chinese community to catch up with the development of the times through the rural space narrative. The third chapter analyzes the urban space in Jin Ge’s novels. This chapter divides urban space into physical, social, and spiritual spaces, and discusses them separately. The city of Jin Ge’s novel was created with the urban space of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province as the background. The urban’s physical space can be divided into multiple public space and living space in the field of daily life.Urban public space is a prosperous and tempting,multi-space mixed with old and new, west and est cultures.Living space is not only the basic guarantee for people’s survival in the city, but also a mirror reflecting people’s urban experience and living conditions.Although the novel characters in Jin Ge’s works are living in cities,it is difficult to find a sense of belonging in the cities. They are estranged from the city and linger around the city like a passenger. They worked hard to take root in the city, but the only thing they responded to was the apathy of the city. The contradiction between tolerance and exclusion of urban space highlights the nature of urban cowardice. The urban’s social space can bedivided into an oppressed power space, and a wandering space for left-behind children.Urban is a space governed by power.People with power can make self-interested choices and take the initiative.Urban space is also a confusing space for left-behind children in adolescence. They lack the love and care of their parents, and they also lack a person who teaches them to distinguish right from wrong. In the novel, the author tries to resolve the contra dictions between the two generations, thus depicting a bright future for the Korean-Chinese society. The spiritual space of urban can be divided into as pace where money comes first,a space of alienation, and a space of powerlessness. With the rapid development of the economy, people have gradually realized the importance of money, family and friendship have become pale and weak in front of money. The value of money supremacy in cities has already subverted traditional values. In the novel of "Women in Juzi Street",through the tragedy of the protagonist’s rejection and neglect in family, love, and friendship after entering the city, you can know that the spiritual space of the city is full of alienation. The author also pays attention to the group of husbands whose wives work outside and stay alone in the city to take care of their children.By describing their spiritual world, the author shows the lonely and weak spiritual space of the urbanThe fourth chapter analyzes the space of South Korea in Jin Ge’s novels. This chapter divides the space of South Korea into physical, social, and spiritual spaces, and discusses them separately. The space of South Korea in Jin Ge’s novels is mainly based on the memories and dialogues of the characters in the novel. The South Korea’s physical space mainly describes the working environment and living space of Korean-Chinese who working in South Korea. From the description of the working environment,we can know that their work has high risks and long working hours. They mainly work in dirty, messy, and poor jobs in the service industry or construction sites. The dark, depressing living space shows their hard-working life without seeing hope. The author comprehensively presents the true life of the Korean-Chinese community working in South Korea by depicting different images of Korean-Chinese workers. The author also expressed the urgent hope that migrant workers in South Korea would like to return to their country soon and live h appily with their families.South Korea is anegative space in novel.Korean-Chinese mistakenly believe that South Korea is their second hometown, imagine being treated warmly by Koreans. They thought they could make a lot of money when they arrived in South Korea, but after they arrived in South Korea, they realized that everything was just their own simple fantasy.Through the story of being squeezed by a bad Korean boss,it shows us an oppressed social space. Some of the bad Korean bosses not only deducted the wages of the workers, but also treated them coldly and sarcastically. In such a working environment,Korean-Chinese workers can be said to be oppressed both mentally and physically. In addition, there are many characters who are illegally stranded in South Korea,so they have to avoid Korean investigatio ns while looking for work. And when they are treated unreasonably, they cannot apply for legal protection, they eventually hurt themselves because of excessive desire. The spiritual space of South Korea is a space of disappointment and reflection.Under the impact of reality and ideals, the Korean-Chinese workers are disappointed with the space of South Korea. In the novel, there are also have some kind Korean characters who understand and have pity for the Korean-Chinese.With their help and guidance, for Korean-Chinese workers,South Korea is also a space for introspection. The fifth chapter is a summary of the above analysis. After analyzing Jin Ge’s series of works created on the theme of Korean-Chinese society,it can be said that the rural space, the urban space and the space of South Korea are the real protagonist of the novel.Through the space experience of the characters in the novel, the author restores the stage of contemporary Korean-Chinese people’s life, gains insights into the problems of Korean society from a spatial perspective, deepens the unique significance of rural, urban, and the South Korea spaces, and expresses the significance of attitudes and opinions on the three spaces. |
