A Study On Buddhist Yoga Flame Mouth Ceremony In Hue Province, Vietnam

Buddhism is very good at adapting to local cultures,because the monks believe that "when in Rome do as Romans do",in other words adaptation of their behaviors to the local cultures is the most important strategy for spreading Buddhism effectively.Rituals in Buddhism is not an exception,creating diverse rituals among different places.This master's thesis researches into the Buddhist ritual of“yoga flame mouth",which is translated as "yoga flame mouth",in Thua Thien Hue province,Vietnam.The document of "chanh khac trung khoa du da tap yeu"translated as "Engraved Encyclopedia of Yoga",which is used by variety of pagodas in Thua Thien Hue province,is used as an important reference in the study.In the study,the author shows the historical context when the ritual was introduced into Vietnam.The setting,and sequence steps carried throughout the ceremony are also described in detail."Yoga flame mouth" is a very musical ritual thank to its musical chanting thought-out the ceremony.Of course,due to the adaptability of Buddhism,the local folk songs were used in the Buddhist gates when Hue arrived.This may be the most effective way for spreading Buddhism.Nevertheless,in this thesis,the author chose not to be musical,but to analyze and understand his interest in "yoga flame mouth"ritual from the perspective of religion.The author also gave a detailed description of the mandala and the procedural ceremonies of the sacred "yoga flame mouth"ceremony in Hue,and further clarified the Buddhist teachings brought by the yoga flame mouth ceremony.The thesis consists of four parts:The introduction is composed of the purpose and significance of the topic,the relevant dynamics of research at home and abroad,the scope and method of the research object,the research goal and the content.The first chapter is a historical review of the origin and evolution of the Huo Yoga flame mouth instrument in Vietnam,and some introductions to the Hue Buddhist profile.The second chapter is the mandala design and content of "Yoga Flame Mouth Ceremony" in Hue Province,Vietnam.Including:setting of altar,the participants,text content of "Yoga Flame Mouth Ceremony",which is transltaed as "Meditation in the center of the city",from Hue,Vietnam,sequence steps,equipment used during the ceremony.The third chapter analyses values of Buddhist philosophies in the ritual,and how they affect to people who live in Hue.
