This thesis is concern with the study of compactifications of the decorated moduli space of stable surfaces. The first main result identifies the homeomorphism types of these compactifications. The second main result introduces cellular decompositions of these compact ifications using semi-stable ribbon graphs extending the earlier work of Looijenga.
