Abstract/Summary:
East Asian libraries in North America with a Chinese collection face a unique challenge today in accessing and managing Chinese electronic resources. This thesis reports on a survey of Chinese electronic resources in these libraries, with a focus on digital content providers, major databases, electronic materials, management and services in terms of scope, content, and technical standards. It examines the way special language expertise, special platforms, different coding systems, software standards, loading and servicing requirements are involved in management of Chinese databases. Chinese copyright issues of Chinese electronic resources are extensively discussed. Special attention is also given to data loading, preservation, archiving, and system upgrades. This study may be a useful resource for those East Asian libraries wanting to incorporate Chinese electronic resources to their Chinese collections.
