The inevitable reality of aging is especially challenging for female singers. Women between the ages of forty and fifty five face challenges caused by the hormonal fluctuations of menopause. Estrogen deprivation causes vocal changes including hoarseness, breathiness, and a reduction in range. In addition, a swelling of the vocal folds and changes in the amount and consistency of the mucous membranes lining the vocal tract are all concerns. Although it is impossible to reverse the aging process, it is important to know that some symptoms may be postponed or corrected. The menopausal student has unique issues related to her voice, and responsible pedagogues should be informed of recent findings concerning these issues. Considering medical possibilities such as hormone replacement therapy, proper nutrition, weight control, cardiovascular exercise, as well as vocal exercise, may prolong the quality singing years.
