| Part One of this document is the result of an American art song educational outreach program that was created to specifically target school children, ages 5--11 (kindergarten through fifth grade). The mission of this outreach program is to foster American art song by educating children through song performance and, in doing so, offer elementary school music teachers a creative alternative to achieving the goals of their daily music lesson plans.; The overall objective of this document is to provide future outreach performers with resources and a methodology for creating similar outreach programs. The document focuses mostly on the method behind the outreach program, such as reviewing the applicable resources, selecting appropriate songs, the preparation and execution of the programs themselves, conclusions based on feedback from both teacher and students, and educational and performance suggestions for those interested in organizing these types of outreach programs.; Resources used for the development of the educational aspects of this program were the Kentucky Department of Education's Combined Curriculum Document, specifically the Core Content for Assessment, and the Silver-Burdett Making Music Series. This document also includes an American art song index compiled by the author with songs deemed appropriate for use in classroom presentations, publishing information, appropriate voice type, elements of musical interest and different interdisciplinary purposes.; Part Two of this document contains program notes from the four recitals given to fulfill the performance requirement of the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree. The four recitals include one of each of the following: solo recital, chamber recital, major opera role in a school production, and lecture recital.; Keywords: Outreach education, American Art Song, Silver-Burden Making Music Series: Kentucky Department of Education, Combined Curriculum Document... |
