Abstract/Summary:
Downhill skiing is a physical expression of fluidity, rhythm, and harmony that establishes an organic connection between humans and nature. This unique experience conjures education, tranquility, and awe. Specialty equipment, diverse mountain terrain, and an appropriate climate are the necessary elements. While mountaineers rely on the natural terrain and climate for their experience, it is clear that mountains are the prime ingredient and climate is the greatest variable. The climate of a region represents the typical or average weather occurrence and therefore, climate change is the change in that typical or average weather. Climate change has an overwhelming effect on the environment but also diverse impacts on global resources. High elevations have experienced three times the global average temperature increase over the past century. These ecosystems provide the water that humans depend on as well as natural services such as snow-based recreation, timber, and critical habitat for animal wildlife. It is important to understand how the Earth's climate works and what causes climate change. Greenhouse gases are harmful to the Earth's atmosphere and utilizing cleaner energy sources such as the sun, wind, and water will reduce greenhouse gases. As the Earth's climate continues to change, the threat to mountain ecosystems increases and the risk of losing snow-based recreation becomes inevitable. Today more than ever, society needs high-quality environmental education programs that succeed in creating values and changing behaviors in the direction of sustainability and environmental conservation. Colorado's Rocky Mountains represent some of the most famous mountain ranges in the world. The state is famous for its abundant wilderness adventure including backcountry skiing, that has recently doubled in popularity due to its limitless potential for fluid and harmonious adventure.;By blending research, education, and hospitality, I propose to establish a mountaintop weather research observatory that creates a dynamic connection between man and nature that educates and inspires. The experience will serve as a catalyst that will encourage environmental stewardship and drive behavior change regarding environmental conservation.
