Black ash (Fraxinus nigra Marsh.) is a significant resource for the Saint Regis Mohawk tribe in Northern New York and many other Native American tribes. Black ash trees in Northern New York are used primarily for basket making, and the need for this resource is increasing as good sources of black ash are becoming increasingly difficult to find. This paper examines the physiology of black ash seedlings on three distinct microsites in terms of photosynthesis rates, stomatal conductance, and hydraulic resistance. It also examines the thinning of black ash and its effects on diameter growth and regeneration.
