This thesis explores the possibilities and implications of storytelling in interactive digital media. The expansion and popularity of social media have resulted in an ever-growing wealth of data. As a result, finding effective methods of utilizing such information has become a priority in the digital age. This thesis investigates the traditional concept of narrative in data visualization and creates a web-based computer program, titled Virtupolis, to employ the research findings. Applying visual design ideas, video game theories and software design approaches, this research identifies and demonstrates the key factors in creating narrative in data visualization. Despite the complexities and challenges of introducing narrative to interactive digital media, storytelling can create a tangible approach to information and facilitate a wider accessibility.
