This thesis explores the complexities of the black female voice found throughout Toni Morrison's novels. The analysis illustrates how Morrison's black female main characters found dignity in some of the darkest places in the human landscape. And when these women were faced with racism, class struggles, and isolation, they were able to rise from these dark places to find balance within. Through Morrison's selected prose, vivid imagery, and narrative style, she was able to give her readers the black female voice. Morrison was able to show the reader how unique, dark, and dignified the black female voice really is.;This study challenges those critics who feel that Toni Morrison romanticized the black female voice and created a false sense of black female identity in her novels. The study counters those claims with examples of how Morrison took pieces of history, culture, and folklore and constructed the black female voice, a voice that makes Morrison one of the most profound African American writers in America today.
