Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this research was to determine the source of lithic materials recovered from the Village Creek sites. The writer used a combination of comparative analysis and ultraviolet fluorescence to compare archaeological samples recovered from the Fountain, Riley, and Killian sites with geological samples collected from source outcrops and local gravel deposits.;Upon completion of UVF testing, the writer found that a majority of the archaeological samples from each site were composed of Edwards chert.;More than one source was predicted before the study began. Flake type analysis (primary, secondary, and tertiary), shifts from quartzite to chert for stone tool manufacturing, the examination of lithic cores regarding raw material type and cortex type (weathering type), and the travel distance to the nearest geological outcropping of Edwards chert led to the conclusion that both types of sources were used for lithic procurement by the inhabitants of the studied sites.
