Voyage is an original composition for symphonic wind ensemble of approximately twelve minutes duration. The composition is inspired by the “voyage” of my life. When I think of the word “voyage,” I imagine that I am on the middle of the ocean, and meet many kinds of waves. Waves are metaphors for the circumstances around my life. Some waves move very slowly with intensive force while others surge quickly.; The clusters of the opening texture of Voyage represent a gigantic wave which moves very slowly. The melodic material of the piece represents an individual small wave. Abruptly descending motions in the woodwinds and percussion suggests a harsh wave.; The composition is divided into four sections. The first section begins with a slow homophonic texture alternating between woodwind and brass. The various combinations of instruments gradually combine to create a more complex texture and timbre. In addition, the use of doubling and extension of register increases the density of the section.{09}In this section the primary structural motive is a chromatic cluster.; The second section presents melodic material which is first stated by the solo bassoon, and subsequently played by various instruments. The melodic lines that follow the bassoon solo are ultimately woven into a texture of melodies.; The tempo of the music changes suddenly in the third section becoming fast moving and energetic. The section begins with a descending motion in the clarinet and the percussion. In the middle of this section, a tuba solo is introduced, accompanied by brass and percussion.; The fourth section begins with the combination of the homophonic texture and thematic melody, but the homophonic texture overwhelms the thematic melody in the large final wave that concludes the piece.
