Abstract/Summary:
The well planned emergency management of urban system after catastrophic earthquake is important. This thesis generates simulation tools by which one can test various restoration strategies to determine optimal allocation of restoration resources based upon the economic return concept for lifeline in urban system. These tools allow the study of the relative effect on the urban system of the various lifelines to determine which among these subsystems are the most significant in term of economic return. We considered the response of the post-earthquake urban lifeline system through a dynamic model based upon the Markov process. This constitutes a multi-dimensional system model that is constructed to study the transient effect and interactions among the various lifelines of the urban system following the major earthquake. Finally, by the computer simulation, various restoration strategies are tested and the optimal allocation of resources is obtained.
