Preliminary Analysis of Thermally Induced Condensed Phase Electron Transfer Reactions of Silver Chloride and Ruthenium Chloride with Electropositive Metal

Abstract/Summary:
Thermally induced condensed phase electron transfer reactions (TICPET) are a relatively unexplored area of chemistry. This research could have implications in the metal extraction process used to separate and refine metals from ores. A comparative study of the reactions of ruthenium chloride and silver chloride with aluminum, cadmium, copper, lead, and tin using TG/DTA and DSC methods was examined.;Ruthenium chloride was found to react with aluminum at 620°C, cadmium at 536°C, copper at 408°C, lead at 437°C, and tin at 220°C. Silver chloride was found to react with aluminum at 570°C, copper at 430°C, lead at 455°C, and tin at 220°C. The DSC experiments yielded similar results to the TG/DTA experiments, showing the same endothermic and exothermic reactions as the TG/DTA with a temperature variance of +/-10°C which is the reported accuracy for the TG/DTA used for these experiments.
