| This thesis investigates the radio plays of the Swiss writer Friedrich Durrenmatt. Since numerous studies about the author's work for the theater have been published, the aim of this thesis is to show the importance of his plays for radio.;The study is divided into three parts. The first shows a historical, socio-cultural background of post-war Germany's new organization of the broadcasting system influenced by the allied decentralizing policy. The second part draws attention to the cultural, political and sociological preconditions of the European environment, which determine the author's approach to his radio plays. The third part interprets the seven radio plays published between 1951 and 1956. In order to achieve a structured and concise analysis, this chapter concentrates on three major issues of social criticism: political assessment of the world situation, commentary on the role of the media, and criticism of the structure of European post-war society.
