Marbles have served as important building materials since the beginning of human civilization.Beijing marble has been widely used to build temples, royal palaces, royal parks, and royal tombs in ancient China. Some of these stone heritage sites represent the highest architectural, artistic, and cultural achievements, and were classified as UNESCO World Heritage sites. As time passing by,these heritage sites experience variant degrees of weathering and deterioration. To scientifically protect these heritages sites, properties of the construction materials, weathering behavior investigation, and post fire hazard evaluation must be systematically studied.Thermal loading is an important factor that lead to the weakening and deterioration of rock materials.Studying the effects of thermal loading on rock materials and methods to evaluating the effects are of great significance in temperature related engineering practices such as weathering evaluation, fire hazard prevention, and conservation of cultural heritage sites. In present study, experimental methods are used to study the basic properties and thermal effects on a Beijing dolomitic marble. The basic physical and mechanical parameters of two commonly used subtypes of Beijing dolomitic marble are tested, statistical correlations among parameters are analyzed, quality between Beijing dolomitic marble and marbles in literatures are compared;relevant results have increased understanding of this material's properties and facilitated scientific explanation of the logic in material usage by ancient constructors. The thermal weathering behaviour under natural condition is simulated experimentally. The marble weathering processes are discussed based on experimental results,a non-destructive weathering evaluation method is proposed and discussed;relevant results have application potential for field testing. The effects of variant high temperatures on physico-mechanical properties of Beijing dolomitic marble are studied,trans-scale relationships are investigated,a post-hazard evaluation method is proposed;relevant results have disclosed patterns of property changes after variant high temperature treatments. The obtained results in this study are helpful in cultural heritage evaluation, restoration, and reconstruction in Beijing area;the proposed weathering evaluation and post-hazard evaluation methods have reference value in preservation practices in similar cases;the methodologies adopted in this study also provide references for future studies in this field.
