In the design of buildings in cold regions, not only the utilization of ice should be considered, but also the prevention of ice disaster should be carried out, which must consider the mechanical properties of ice, including compressive strength, tensile strength, fracture toughness and so on.In the last century, the research on the mechanical properties of ice has been started, and the sample methods are different in different degrees. With the rapid development of water conservancy projects and aviation infrastructure in the north and south polar cold regions and some countries close to the polar circle, the demand for the research depth of ice mechanical properties is increasing. In this paper, the Brazilian splitting test method commonly used in the rock field is used to study the mechanical properties of ice and explore its reliability, and it is extended to the scientific research of polar ice.Ice slabs were cut from Shifosi Reservoir in Shenyang,Liaoning Province and Prydz Bay in Antarctica, and processed into vertical and horizontal slices to observe ice crystals,so as to determine the crystal structure of ice in Shifosi Reservoir in Shenyang.Use the equivalent diameter method to calculate the average size of the ice crystals in the crystal photos. The ice billet is processed into Brazilian split loading specimens, and then the specimens are loaded using an electronic testing machine, and the mechanical parameters, tensile strength and fracture toughness of the ice of Shenyang Shifosi Reservoir and Antarctic sea ice are obtained. On the premise of ensuring that the failure modes of Shifosi Reservoir ice and Antarctic sea ice in Shenyang are brittle failure, the effects of test temperature, strain rate, loading direction and salinity on the tensile strength and fracture toughness of natural ice are analyzed.Test conclusion: The tensile strength and fracture toughness of Shenyang Shifosi Reservoir ice and Antarctic sea ice both decrease with the increase of strain rate; The tensile strength and fracture toughness of natural ice in the vertical loading direction are higher than those in the horizontal loading direction;the tensile strength and fracture toughness of Antarctic sea ice increase with the increase of temperature;the results show that the tensile strength and fracture toughness of Shenyang Shifosi Reservoir ice Fracture toughness increases with decreasing temperature; The tensile strength and fracture toughness of ice in Shifosi Reservoir of Shenyang are greater than those of Antarctic sea ice;The test temperature with the highest success rate is-16?;The probability of effective data obtained from each group of tests is more than 70%,that proved the feasibility of the Brazilian split test;compared with the results obtained by the traditional test method,it is at an order of magnitude, they are all in the same order of magnitude, which shows the reliability of Brazilian splitting test; The Brazilian splitting test with Antarctic sea ice determines the applicability of Brazilian splitting method in polar cold regions.
