The Persian Gulf basin and Eastern Venezuela basin both are the foreland basin on top of the passive margin layer, which are the richest petroliferous ones in the world.Based on the latest oil and gas geological data, guided by the theories of basin analysis and comprehensive petroleum geology research, this paper studies hydrocarbon resource and the oil and gas distribution characteristics of the two basins by using Arc GIS spatial analysis module mapping technology. The result shows that the total resource of oil and gas was 2336.8×10~8toe and the resource potential accounts for(Ratio of remaining recoverable resources to total recoverable resources)80.8%in Persian Gulf basin;but the total resource of oil and gas was 733.9×10~8toe and the resource potential accounts for 96.2%in Eastern Venezuela basin. It also indicates that there exist significant differences in geological resource elements and structure in Persian Gulf basin and Eastern Venezuela basin. The conventional oil and gas recovery of the former is higher than that of the latter, and recovery of extra-heavyl oil in the eastern Venezuela basin is the lowest, only 19.6%.In the Persian Gulf basin, the conventional oil and gas are the main oil and gas resources to be discovered, while in the Eastern Venezuela basin, the extra-heavy oil is the main one.The former has low oil and gas resource abundance, while the latter is higher than the former. The distribution of oil and gas resources in the two basins shows regional identity(enriched in the same structural units)and differences in strata and reservoir lithofacies and petroleum systems. The great difference of oil and gas resource enrichment between the Persian Gulf basins and the Eastern Venezuela basin in the passive margin and foreland basin periods is mainly controlled by the hydrocarbon generation potential of source rocks, the generation and the allocation relationship between regional cap and transport system.
