Based on the meteorological data of 26 meteorological stations in northern Xinjiang from 1961 to 2016,the agricultural drought index was calculated, and the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of agricultural climate resources and agricultural drought during the growth period of sugarbeet in northern Xinjiang and its potential impact on sugarbeet production were explored. The research results are as follows:(1)During the growth period of sugarbeet in northern Xinjiang, the average temperature, precipitation and accumulated temperature of ?10? showed an increase trend, while the solar duration, relative humidity, reference crop evapotranspiration and average wind speed showed a downward trend. The average temperature and precipitation had more mutation sites and had strong 30 years cycle. In terms of spatial distribution, the average temperature and accumulated temperature of ?10? were both higher in central but lower in northeast and southwest.Precipitation, relative humidity and reference crop evapotranspiration were higher in southwest but lower in northeast.Sunshine duration was higher in northeast.Average wind speed was lower in central, higher in northwest and southeast.(2)In different growth stages of sugarbeet in northern Xinjiang, the crop water requirement and crop water deficit index showed a downward trend, the effective precipitation increased, and there were multi-scale periodic changes in each growth stage of sugarbeet, but there were main cycles of about 30 years. The mutation site and mutation time were all different. In terms of spatial distribution,in each growth period of sugarbeet, crop water requirement was low in the north but high in the south, effective precipitation was high in the southwest, and crop water deficit index was low in the southwest from the spatial distribution, respectively. The crop water requirement and crop water deficit index of sugarbeet at different growth stages were negatively correlated with precipitation and relative humidity, but positively correlated with sunshine duration and average wind speed. The relative contribution rate of average wind speed, relative humidity and precipitation were higher.(3)In each growing stage of sugarbeet, the average drought intensity in the past 56 years was the highest in the middle stage, and the lowest in the early stage. In the interannual variation, the drought intensity and the ratio of dry stations in each growing stage of sugarbeet showed a significant downward trend. The ratio of non-drought stations showed a significant increase trend, while the ratio of severe drought stations showed a significant decrease trend. In terms of spatial distribution, the mild drought in the three stages of sugarbeet growth occurred more frequently than that of other grades of drought in most areas of northern Xinjiang. The climatic yield of sugarbeet in northern Xinjiang was negatively correlated with crop water requriement and crop water deficit index, and its downward trend was beneficial to the growth of sugarbeet. It was positively correlated with effective precipitation, and its increase trend promoted the growth of sugarbeet. On the whole, the climatic yield of sugarbeet in northern Xinjiang showed a weak increase trend.
