Oil is a powerful source of energy,Canada has the third largest oil reserves in the world. However, the development of Canada’s petroleum industry still has many issues of concern, resulting in the lack of competitiveness of Canadian petroleum products and the inability to gain overseas market share. There have been many domestic studies on Canadian energy, but there are relatively few systematic studies on the international competitiveness and export status of Canadian oil,so the international competitiveness of Canadian oil exports is used as the object of analysis. This paper introduces the background and export characteristics of the Canadian oil industry. The international competitiveness of Canadian oil exports and the status of its position in the world oil market are described through the calculation of technical indicators such as international market share and market penetration. The specific reasons for the changes in export competitiveness are analyzed in the light of relevant theories. Then, using the gravity model, the factors influencing Canadian oil exports are analyzed empirically.Based on the above research, policy recommendations are given to enhance the international competitiveness of Canadian oil exports. The study proves that Canada’s oil export trade is extremely competitive and competitive internationally and that Canada is a major trading country for petroleum products. The empirical analysis concludes that the Canadian currency exchange rate, the economic size gap between Canada and importing countries, and the oil consumption of importing countries have a significant impact on the volume of Canadian oil exports. To improve the international competitiveness of Canadian oil exports,Canada needs to improve Canadian oil development technology to reduce the cost of oil extraction, build more pipelines to solve the problem of insufficient transportation capacity and develop the Asia-Pacific market to gain more global market share.
