The development of lion motif in China has its unique role and meaning.The theme of lion from foreign countries is passed back and forth in the Silk Road and gradually changed.In the process of spreading to the Chinese civilization circle,the lion motif slowly integrated the ancient Chinese culture.Affected by the social background and the needs of the audience in different periods,it has different symbolic meanings,and its inherent implication is constantly changing.The paper takes the lion motif on silk fabrics from the Northern Dynasties to the Yuan dynasty as the research object,supplemented by the lion image in other art forms such as gold and silverware,stone carving,painting and murals in the same period.The research contents are as follows:Firstly,the paper sorts out the archaeological and discovery situation of lion motif silk fabrics from the Northern Dynasties to the Yuan dynasty from three aspects : the unearthed objects from the tombs,some objects in the museum collections and lion motif silk fabrics collected by private individuals.Secondly,the paper summarizes and analyzes the modeling characteristics,composition forms and theme characteristics of the lion motif in silk fabrics in three periods of Northern Dynasties to Sui dynasty,Tang dynasty and Liao,Song and Yuan dynasties.In this process,the lion motif on silk and other works of art at the same time the image of the lion motif were compared,so as to support the view of the article and explore the particularity of the lion decoration in silk.Pattern restoration provides a more intuitive reference for exploring the evolution of lion motif on silk fabrics.Finally,the paper traces and discusses the western origin of the lion motif and the evolution process of the lion motif in ancient China,explores the influence of Chinese and Western exchanges on the lion motif silk fabrics from the Northern Dynasties to the Yuan dynasty,including the influence of technology and pattern artistic style.The conclusions of this paper are as follows.(1)The lion motif on silk fabrics first appeared in the Northern Dynasties,flourished and gradually shaped in the Sui and Tang dynasties,which had an important impact on the development of the lion motif of later dynasties.The lion motif on silk fabrics from the Northern Dynasties to the Yuan dynasty carries the characteristics of the times of society and culture in different periods.It not only embodies the changes of historical culture and decorative aesthetics,but also reflects the process of mutual communication and acceptance between Chinese and foreign cultures at that time.(2)Lion motif in silk fabrics are mainly affected by South Asian,Central Asian and Western Asian cultures.Technical exchanges between China and the West have led to the innovation of weaving technology and lion motif,and also enriched the manifestations of lion motif.Lion motif style on silk fabric is influenced by foreign religious culture,among which Buddhism and Zoroastrianism are the most typical.The lion motif on silk fabrics in different periods are inherited.The lion motif on silk fabrics are influenced by Chinese traditional culture and art,showing the trend of inoculation and integration,and gradually evolved into a unique symbol of Chinese cultural auspicious image elements.It shows the imitation,absorption and innovation of traditional lion motif on foreign cultures.The research on lion motif in silk fabrics from the Northern Dynasties to the Yuan dynasty has supplemented new information for the research on traditional animal motifs of Chinese silk from the perspective of Sino-foreign exchanges.It also reflects the interactive two-way communication and mutual learning of silk patterns,technology,art and culture in the context of Sino-foreign exchanges,and the extensive and lasting influence of Sino-foreign exchanges.
