China has undergone a profound trade liberalization reform in the past three decades.Since the early 1990s,China has accelerated the promotion of trade liberalization, and issued many policies focusing on reducing tariffs and reducing non-tariff trade barriers. After joining the WTO in 2001,China’s trade liberalization process has also been accelerating, and my country’s foreign trade has also entered a new stage, from partial opening to full opening. At the same time,my country’s import trade has developed rapidly, especially the import trade of intermediate products, which occupies a dominant position in my country’s import structure. However,we have also noticed that as the total volume of trade has grown, the accompanying environmental pollution problems have become increasingly prominent. Therefore, how to achieve the high-quality development of foreign trade while reducing the level of industrial pollution emissions is an important practical issue that needs to be resolved. In view of this, this article takes China’s entry into the WTO as a quasi-natural experiment, and analyzes the impact of the liberalization of trade in intermediate products on the pollutant discharge behavior of Chinese enterprises based on the data of Chinese industrial enterprises and China’s industrial pollution data from 1998 to 2012.The main research content of the article is as follows:First of all, this article sorts out and summarizes the relevant literature on the impact of trade liberalization on the environment, the impact of intermediate trade liberalization on the production performance of enterprises, and the impact of intermediate trade liberalization on corporate pollution behavior.Secondly, based on the theoretical model of Halpern(2015),this paper incorporates corporate pollution behavior into the production function, and derives the research hypothesis of this paper through the derivation of the theoretical model. It also analyzes the typical facts about the liberalization of trade in intermediate goods and the behavior of corporate pollution, and the relationship between the two is preliminarily drawn.Thirdly, this article uses the three-digit industry tariff rate of intermediate goods in 2001 as a proxy variable for the liberalization of intermediate goods trade, conducts an empirical analysis, explores the impact of trade liberalization in intermediate goods on the pollution emissions of Chinese enterprises, and finds that the liberalization of intermediate goods trade has indeed reduced The company’s pollution emissions have been verified through a series of robustness tests to verify the robustness of the research conclusions;consider that the impact of the liberalization of trade in intermediate goods on corporate pollution emissions will exist due to differences in corporate productivity, corporate size, and ownership Differences, this article also conducted a heterogeneous analysis. At the same time,in order to explore the mechanism by which the liberalization of trade in intermediate goods affects the pollution emissions of enterprises, this paper analyzes the mechanism and finds that the liberalization of trade in intermediate goods affects the pollution emissions of enterprises through technical effects, and finds that the liberalization of trade in intermediate goods affects the pollution emissions of enterprises through intermediate goods. The type effect and the quantity effect influence the production of the enterprise and then the pollution discharge of the enterprise. Finally, based on the research, the conclusions of this article are drawn, and corresponding policy recommendations are put forward.
