Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs)are one of the main causes of the poor indoor air quality(IAQ),the main emission sources are various building decoration materials. In particular, the VOCs emitted from building decoration materials have more serious impacts on the IAQ of the newly renovated buildings. In this paper, the long-term variation characteristics and compositions of VOCs in newly decorated buildings are studied from three aspects:field measurement, emission characteristics of building decoration materials and VOCs impact assessment. The main contributions are summarized as follows:(1)Long-term field measurements were carried out in a newly decorated apartment in Nanjing. The indoor VOCs types, chemical compositions, and concentration variation patterns during and after decoration were analyzed. The results showed that the main indoor VOCs of this newly decorated apartment are aromatics, aldehyde and alkanes, their total concentration accounted for more than 60%of TVOC.During the decoration, the types and concentrations of indoor VOCs exhibited a pattern of step changes with the progress of the decoration. The indoor TVOC concentration ranged from 151–2535μg/m~3,and its concentration was the highest after the floor was installed. After the completion of the decoration, the types of indoor VOCs and TVOC concentration both gradually decreased, while the concentration of some VOCs varied with temperature and humidity. And indoor TVOC concentration ranged from 46-317μg/m~3.(2)Dynamic environmental chamber tests were carried out on the VOC emissions from the main building decoration materials of the target apartment.According to the one-phase mass transfer model of the dry material and the double exponential model of the wet material, the key emission parameters of each material were regressed.Based on the chemical compositions and emission strengths of the VOCs emitted from each material, the emission characteristics were analyzed, and the main emission sources of various VOCs during the decoration were analyzed according to the results of field measurements and environmental chamber tests.(3)According to the emission parameters of the main indoor decoration materials, the VOCs concentrations in the target apartment were simulated by using the VOCs pre-assessment simulation method.Based on the health risk assessment method, the carcinogenic risk and non-carcinogenic risk of indoor VOCs to interior decoration workers and ordinary residents were analyzed.Based on the odor pollution assessment method, the odor pollution of VOCs emitted from the main decoration materials and VOCs in the target apartment were analyzed separatly. The main indoor carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic VOCs were formaldehyde, which accounted for more than 40%,and the main odor pollution came from aldehydes such as heptaldehyde, octanal, nonanal and hexanal with low odor threshold. The VOCs with the most serious odor pollution was octanal, and its OAV reached 43.664 when the decoration was completed. In addition, the odor pollution of wet materials was generally higher than that of dry materials,in which, the most serious odor pollution was from wall paint, and the least was skirting lines.
