Environmental pollution not only affects the quality of China’s economic growth and national image, but also seriously affects the physical and mental health of the public, making people face huge health risks.Private health insurance is an important part of the national multi-level medical security system, and it is also an important area for the insurance industry to serve people’s livelihood.Do the effects of environmental pollution on public health increase the demand for private health insurance? How about the public’s perception of environmental pollution and health risks? This paper analyzes the impact of environmental pollution on the demand for private health insurance, and proposes a mediating variable based on individual health level to further explore residents’ attitude towards health risk,in order to provide a reference for policy making and product business development of commercial insurance companies. In view of this, this paper studies the related problems.First of all, based on the research results of combing and summarizing the health effects of environmental pollution, the influencing factors of private health insurance demand, and the impact of environmental pollution on the demand for private health insurance, this paper uses Grossman’s health demand theory and environmental stress theory to analyze the relationship between environmental pollution and private health insurance needs. Then it analyzes the current environmental pollution situation, the development status and influencing factors of private health insurance in China. At the same time,it puts forward the intermediary variable based on individual health level and makes further mechanism analysis. Finally,by using the macro panel data of 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions(except Tibet)from 2007 to 2017,the relationship between environmental pollution and private health insurance demand and the mediating effect were empirically tested by setting the panel data model and the mediating effect model. The following conclusions are drawn from the study: environmental pollution has a significant promotion effect on the demand for private health insurance. The sample study shows that such a positive effect is significant in the eastern, central and western regions of China, but it has a greater positive effect on the demand for private health insurance in the eastern region of China;Residents in our country towards personal health risk is still in a "afterwards" attitude.Personal health level plays a complete mediating role in the process of environmental pollution affecting private health insurance demand, and the mediation effect has regional differences.Environmental pollution in the eastern part of China only has a direct impact on the demand of private health insurance, but there is no intermediary effect, while there is a complete intermediary effect in the central and western regions. It shows that residents in the eastern region have been in the attitude of "avoiding in advance" towards personal health risks. Finally, the policy suggestions of this paper are put forward: Develop scientific and diversified health insurance products;Further develop medical and health services;Subdivide user groups to achieve precision marketing;Strengthen health risk management education to cultivate a good insurance culture atmosphere;Break the medical and health care "information island" to realize the medical information sharing.
