Objective To evaluate the clinical effect and safety of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation(TEAS)in the treatment of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome(IBS-D)with pattern of the liver-qi invading the spleen patients. Methods A total of 109 patients with IBS-D who fit into the inclusion criteria were enrolled. All involved patients were randomly divided into 2 groups. The dividing method from the randomized controlled clinical trail. The treatment group was stimulated 3 acupoints(Taichong,Yinlingquan and Tianshu). The control group was simulated for TEAS by stimulating the same acupoints. The treatment lasted for 4 weeks for each group and twice a day.Outcome measurement included IBS bowel symptom severity scale(IBS-BSS),IBS defecation state questionnaire(IBS-DSQ),and traditional chinese medicine pattern effect scale were measured before and 4 weeks after the treatment respectively. Results All the patients were not victimized for any untoward effect. For IBS-D patients, the result of overall effect indicated that the total effective ratios of IBS-BSS were 81.48%,50.91%(P<0.01),the total effective ratios of IBS-DSQ were 88.89%,60.00%(P<0.01),and the total effective ratios of traditional chinese medicine pattern effect scale were 81.48%,52.73%(P<0.01)for TEAS group and placebo group respectively. Conclusion TEAS is effective in the treatment of IBS-D with pattern of the liver-qi invading the spleen patients, provides significant improvement of bowel symptoms and defecation state, and improves the traditional chinese medicine syndrome. It is proved that they are fairly safe. |
