Natural products are important sources for new drug research and development.Discovering bioactive chemical constituents from the traditional medicinal plants is important for new drug research and the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine. In this paper, two medicinal plants,Viburnum odoratissimum var.sessilifolrum and Sophora davidii, have been studied on their chemical constituents by using many kinds of chromatographic techniques(silica gel column chromatography LH-20 sepahdex and semi-preparative HPLC)and spectroscopic techniques(1H,13C,1H-1H COSY,HSQC,HMBC,ROESY NMR,and MS)to yield twenty-three pure compounds, including five new compounds. In addition, selected isolates were evaluated for their antitumor activity with MTT method. In the first chapter,95%ethanol extracts of V.odoratissimum var.sessilifolrum leaves and twigs were investigated to obtain 13 pure compounds.Vbsane-type diterpenoids 1-8 and iridoid glycosides 9-13 were identified as dehydrovibsanol B(1),neovibsanin P(2),vibsanol B(3),vibsanol A(4),15-O-methylvibsanol A(5),vibsanin H(6),dehydrovibsanin G(7),vibsanin G(8),2’-hydroxyopulus iridoidΙ(9),2’,3’-dihydroxy-6’-acetylopulus iridoidΙ(10),2’,3’-dihydroxy-4’,6’-diacetylopulus iridoidΙ(11),opulus iridoidΙ(12),7,10,2’,3’-tetraacetylsuspensolide F(13).Amongst,1,2 and 9-11 were new compounds, and the rest were isolated from this plant for the first time.Selected isolates were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against a panel of human cancer cells HCT-116,A-549 and Hela, and the results showed that compounds4 and 10 displayed moderate inhibiton against HCT-116 cell with IC50value of 13.82μM and 39.27μM.More research are still in progress. In the second chapter,10 compounds were isolated from the extracts of S.davidii leaves and twigs, and their structures were identified as 5,7,4’-trihydroxy-8-lavanduly flavanone(14),isokurarinone(15),kushenol F(16),(2S)-8-[2-(3-hydroxyisopropyl)-5-methyl-4-hexenyl]-2’-methoxy-5,7,4’-trihydroxyflav-anone(17),cudraflavanone D(18),isoliquiritigenin(19),(-)-maackiain(20),sophoracarpan B(21),6-methylgenistein(22),lupinalbin A(23).Anticancer and antioxidant activities research are still in progress.
