At present,China is facing a serious aging problem. The large elderly population makes the society and family bear the growing pressure of supporting the aged. How to achieve active aging and promote the physical and mental health of the elderly has attracted the attention of many scholars.Depression level is one of the important factors to measure mental health. It is influenced by many factors of individual and society. Its influence is not only manifested in the field of psychological perception, but also aggravating the body disease. In recent years, the suicide rate of the elderly in China is still high, and it is closely related to the neglect of mental health problems. At the same time, under the dual structure of urban and rural areas in China, the mental health problems of urban and rural elderly people also show different trends. Therefore,it is particularly important to pay attention to the depression of urban and rural elderly and to explore the mechanism of its influencing factors.Based on the 2015 China health and old-age care tracking survey data, this paper takes urban and rural elderly over 60 years old as the research object and combines the interview data to discuss the difference of depression level between urban and rural elderly under different characteristics. From the perspective of social support, based on the control of personal characteristics and family characteristics, this paper uses multiple linear regression methods to analyze the impact of social support on the depression level of urban and rural elderly.Based on the current situation of dualization between urban and rural areas in China, this paper further explores the different effects of its influencing factors on the elderly in urban and rural areas, and attempts to explain the research results.Studies have shown that there are many factors affecting depression level in the elderly, including informal social support and formal social support. At the same time,in the twoway support of the family, the elderly are more dependent on the family’s support for themselves than the support for the family.Formal social support and informal social support jointly promote the mental health of urban and rural elderly, and the participation of formal social support has no obvious squeeze effect on informal social support. There is a significant difference in the level of depression among urban and rural elderly. And the mechanism of social support on depression level of the aged in urban and rural areas is different. The factors affecting the depression level of rural elderly are multi-faceted.There are both informal social support and formal social support. The factors affecting the depression level of urban elderly are concentrated in informal social support, mainly in terms of emotional support and family care.Family care, frequency of children’s meetings and participation in social activities have a universal effect on urban and rural elderly.Based on the above regression analysis results, this paper puts forward the following suggestions: First,we should advocate the return of family "filial piety culture" in the whole society, and form a good atmosphere of respecting and loving the old in the society;Second,we should advocate the combination of mutual help and family support in the neighborhood to provide multi-faceted life assistance for the elderly;Third,we should promote and improve urban and rural community care services, and build a personalized, flexible and humane community care system for the elderly;Fourth,we should advocate multi-agent and multifaceted encouragement of older people to participate in social activities and promote the diversification of social activities for the elderly;Fifth,we should improve the social security system for the elderly and improve the quality of life of the elderly.
