| ObjectivesThe stay is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of lithospermum oil in the treatment of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis and preliminarily discuss its effect on the physiological indexes of the skin.MethodsA total of 82 atopic dermatitis patients with hear and spleen heat syndrome were enrolled in the dermatology clinic of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. All patients were randomly divided into two groups via the method of digital randomization and received basic moisturization and traditional Chinese medicine therapy. The treatment group was being treated under topical lithospermum oil twice a day for two weeks. After which, the improvements from two groups were evaluated by using SCORAD and CDLQI,and using the German CK MPA580 skin test instrument to measure the skin water content of patients’ inner elbow,TEWL,sebum content and PH value before and after the treatment. The main outcome of this study was the improvement of the severity score of skin lesion with atopic dermatitis patients in 2 weeks, which are measured by the total score of the skin rash severity score questionnaire.Any adverse reactions were observed and recorded during the study.Results82 subjects were enrolled in the research and randomly divided into two groups by method of numerical randomization;42 subjects were enrolled in the treatment group and 40 subjects in the control group.16 subjects were completed and 26 subjects were dropped in the treatment group while 14 subjects completed and 26 subjects dropped in the control group.Comparisons of pre-treatment and post-treatment of the skin lesion severity scores within the same group both had statistically significant differences, among the subjects who completed the test in the treatment group and the control group(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the SCORAD scores between the two groups before and after treatment(P>0.05).Among the secondary observation indicators, comparisons of pretreatment and post-treatment of the insomnia score and quality of life indexes were statistically significant in the treatment group(P<0.05);there was no significant difference between the two groups after treatment(P>0.05).In terms of skin parameters, the statistical results showed no significant difference in the skin water content,TEWL,sebum content,PH value and parameters between the two groups after treatment(P>0.05).There was no significant difference in the the baseline between the treatment group and the control group among the dropped subjects(P>0.05).ConclusionBased on the results of this study, topical use of lithospermum oil combined with traditional Chinese medicine and basic treatment can effectively reduce the severity of skin lesions in patients with atopic dermatitis, and improve insomnia score and quality of life, even though there is no statistical difference compared with the control group.According to the measurement results of the skin physiological function index,it is suggested that repairing the skin barrier function may be one of the main mechanisms of the topical treatment of lithospermum oil with atopic dermatitis patients.Due to the high dropout rate in this study, the conclusion may be affected by the loss of follow-up bias, which brings poor promotion and should be taken seriously in clinical application. |
