BackgroundFacial emotion recognition ability is closely related to social and cognitive ability changes of individuals.Emotion face pictures is widely used in the children and adults psychological, mental diseases, neurodegenerative changes and other fields of experimental research and clinical intervention materials.Age-related changes in social and cognitive functions have attracted increasing attention because of the aging and the increasing size of the elderly population.Because of the own race effect and the own age effect, the existing emotional face picture system at home and abroad is difficult to meet the needs of emotional cognition related research and practice in the local elderly population.ObjectivesTo develop a battery of emotional face picture system suitable for the Chinese elderly.MethodsDuring the development stage of picture system,Chinese professional elderly actors age>60 were recruited as emotional face models, standardized emotion induction materials and facial expression guidance tools were used to conduct threestage immersive emotion induction. The whole process of the occurrence and development of the seven basic facial emotions(neutrality, happy, sad, angry, disgust, and fear)of the model was recorded by the whole process of continuous shooting. The quality screening and software processing of the pictures were carried out,and the picture system of the emotional faces of the elderly was preliminarily developed.During the examination phase, healthy young people were recruited to complete the examination of emotion type, emotion intensity and perceived face age. Then high identification rate(>70%)pictures were randomly selected for emotion type, emotion intensity, face sex standard matching. The healthy elderly were recruited to complete the validation task of emotion type, emotion intensity and perceived face age,and the influence of picture emotion inten.sity on emotion type identity rate was explored by multivariate ANOVA analysis. Finally, compared with the performance of the emotion type recognition task of the external young people’s faces by the elderly hospitalized patients with non-cognitive impairment, the same age effect of the pictures is further tested.Results10 Chinese professional elderly actors(age,68 ± 4.9 years;range,62~78 years;5 female)completed the emotional face picture shooting task.According to picture quality, emotional type(7 basic emotional types),emotional intensity(1:1)and face sex ratio(1:1),two researchers screen out 560 qualified pictures.34 healthy adults(age,23.8±3.1 years,range,19~31 years;13 female)completed the validation of the emotional type, emotional intensity and perceived face age of the qualified pictures, and finally screened out 420 emotional face pictures with high recognition of emotional type(>70%),appropriate emotional intensity ratio, accurate face age perception.126 pictures were balanced for gender and matched for emotion type and emotion intensity were randomly selected to validate in 26 healthy elderly(age,66.9 ± 3.8 years;range,60~79 years;13 female). After controlling for the own age effect, emotional intensity affected the correct rate of recognition of emotional types other than fear in elderly participants.Significant own age effect was observed in 26 elderly raters in the recognition of young and elderly faces.ConclusionPresent study developed Chinese elderly facial emotion picture system, with relatively high recognition rate of the emotional type and perceived age consistent with the model’s real age,and the emotion intensity meets the requirements of high and low grading.Compared with young people, after eliminating the influence of own age effect, the elderly showed obvious negative emotion recognition ability decline in emotion recognition task.
