Background: With the development of economy and society and the change of human living environment, cancer has become one of the major diseases that threaten human life and health, and the morbidity and mortality of cancer in China rank first in the world. With the advancement of medical technology, the life cycle of cancer patients is relatively prolonged, but people pay more attention to the quality of life while prolonging their lives.Cancer is difficult to cure and has a poor prognosis, which can easily lead to physical, psychological, social and spiritual disorders.Spiritual needs are common among cancer patients, and meeting patients’ spiritual needs can help improve their health outcomes. In practical work, medical staff value the physical and psychological needs of cancer patients, but often ignore the spiritual needs of patients. The family function and hope level of cancer patients may have a protective effect on their spirituality. Therefore,it is important to assess the spiritual needs of cancer patients and identify the factors that influence their spiritual needs, which will help guide caregivers to take targeted measures to meet the spiritual needs of cancer patients and further improve the spiritual level of patients. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of spiritual needs, family functions, and hope levels among cancer patients in Shiyan area;clarify the general information of patients, family function, the level of hope’s impact on spiritual needs and the relationship between them;identify factors that predict the spiritual needs of cancer patients. It provides a data support for clinically meeting the spiritual needs of patients and improving their spiritual level. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was adopted in this study. The convenience sampling method was used to select cancer patients from oncology departments of three class 3-A comprehensive hospitals in Shiyan area for investigation.Data were collected using the patient’s general information questionnaire, the Spiritual Needs Scale(Spiritual Needs Scale,SNS),the Family Care Scale(Family APGAR Index,APGAR),and the Hearst Hope Scale(HerthHope Index,HHI).Excel and SPSS22.0 software was used for Statistical analysis which include descriptive analysis, independent sample t-test,ANOVA,Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression. Results: The 309 cancer patients participating in the survey had a total score of(75.59 ± 14.41)for spiritual needs,a total score for family functions of(8.90 ±1.89),and a hope level of(37.74 ± 4.59).Univariate analysis showed that there was a statistically significant difference in the total spiritual needs of cancer patients with different education levels, residence, and pain scores(all P <0.05).Correlation analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between total scores of family function and total spiritual needs(r = 0.329,P <0.01).There was a positive correlation between total scores of hope levels and total spiritual needs(r = 0.447,P <0.01).Multiple linear regression showed that taking positive actions, positive attitudes towards reality and the future, family cooperation, and pain scores were predictors of spiritual needs, and could explain 25.5% of changes in spiritual needs. Conclusion: The spiritual needs of cancer patients in Shiyan area are at a upper-middle level, and the family function is relatively good.Hope level is high.Cancer patients with good family functions, high levels of hope, and low pain scores may have greater spiritual needs. In clinical practice, medical staff should pay attention to the pain management of cancer patients,at the same time pay attention to the spiritual needs of patients, encourage patients to adopt a positive attitude to face life, and actively cooperate with treatment.Families should communicate more actively and deeply with patients, but pay attention to how to share problems.Improving family functions and enhancing patients’ hopes for life will help patients achieve spiritual well-being.
