| Objective:By collecting the levels of serum IGF-2 in patients with bipolar disorder in manic episode before and after treatment and the scores of Young Mania Rating Scale(YMRS),we investigated the relationship between serum IGF-2 levels and the severity of bipolar disorder with manic episodes,in order to clarify the pathophysiological role of IGF-2 in bipolar disorder with manic episodes. Methods:The study included 74 inpatients with bipolar disorder in manic episodes(patient group: 36 males and 38 females)who were diagnosed with ICD-10 from Jiangxi Mental Hospital, and 70 normal community populations were recruited as the control group(33 males and 37 females). There was no statistical difference between two groups in general information such as age, gender, and years of education.Young’s Mania Scale(YMRS-11)was used to assess the severity of patient’s manic symptoms.Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)was adopted to detect serum IGF-2levels in patients and healthy subjects.Bivariate correlations was used to analyze the correlations between the serum IGF-2 levels of patients and gender, age, course of disease, years of education and YMRS scores before and after treatment. Results:There was no statistical difference between patients and control groups in terms of age and education level(P> 0.05).The serum IGF-2 level of the patient group was lower than that of the control group and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The serum IGF-2 level of patients before treatment has no correlation with age, years of education, course of disease and YMRS score. After 8 weeks of treatment, the level of serum IGF-2 in the patient group was higher than that before treatment, and the difference was statistically significant(P < 0.05).There was no correlation between serum IGF-2 levels and Young’s manic scale(YMRS)scores after treatment. Conclusion:Serum IGF-2 levels were decreased in patients with bipolar disorder in manic episodes, suggesting that abnormal IGF-2 signaling may be involved in the pathophysiological process of bipolar disorder with manic episodes, and it may be a characteristic indicator of manic episode in bipolar disorder. |
