Objectives To study prognosis and long-term outcome of induction therapy with clotrimazole, followed by an extended period of maintenance therapy for recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis(RVVC)and Candida species. Methods A retrospective study was performed of RVVC women visited in Peking University Shenzhen Hospital Vaginitis Clinic during a 5-year period(August 2014 to August2019).Data included Candida species distribution, the treatment efficacy after clotrimazole maintenance therapy and after an extended period of maintenance therapy. Results The age range of patients was 32.75±6.68(21~46 years old)without HIV infection.Of 267 patients based on culture-confirmed RVVC were started on the clotrimazole(n=267 cases)regimen.Candida albicans was the predominant Candida species(236 strains,88.4%)followed by C.glabrata(22 strains,8.2 %)and other nonalbicans species(9 strains,3.4 %).The mycological cure rate after the induction therapy, after the induction course at the end of 6 months of maintenance therapy and recurrence rate within 6 months after completion of consolidation therapy was 82.0 %(219/267cases),72.6 %(159/219 cases)and 25.8.%(41/159 cases)in the clotrimazole regimen, respectively. The cure rate of induction therapy, the cure rate of maintenance therapy and the recurrence rate within 6 months after the completion of consolidation therapy caused by Candida albicans,C.glabrata and other non-albicans species were 85.2%(201/236 cases),74.6%(150/201 cases),24.7%(37/150 cases),50.0%(11/22cases),36.4(4/11 cases),25.0%(1/4 cases);and 77.78%(7/9 cases),71.4%(5/7 cases),60.0%(3/5 cases),respectively. No patients appeared serious side reaction when they were treated. In vitro drug sensitivity test was performed in 267 cases of RVVC.Non-albicans other than C.glabrataConclusions:Clotrimazole vaginal suppositories therapy was highly effective and safety in preventing RVVC symptoms.clotrimazole is sensitive to all kind of Candida 。...
