The Correlations Among Suicidal Ideation,Personality Traits And Psychological Resilience In Detainees

Objective:To investigate the status of suicidal ideation,personality traits,and psychological resilience in detainees.To clarify the influence of general condition on suicidal ideation of detainees;To explore the correlations among suicidal ideation,personality traits,and psychological resilience of detainees.To investigate the mediating effect of resilience on personality traits and suicidal ideation.The purpose of this study is to provide a scientific basis for the timely identification of detainees with suicidal ideation to prevent suicide and improve the mental health of detainees.Methods:From January 1st to 15th 2020,we selected 1479detainees from a detention center in Shandong Province.Using a self-reported demographic questionnaire to understand the demographic characteristics of detainees and other general situations.Suicidal Ideation of Self-Rating Scale（SIOSS）,Eysenck Personality Questionnaire（EPQ）,and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale（CD-RISC）were used to investigate detainees’suicidal ideation,personality traits,and psychological resilience.SPSS 23.0 was used for data analysis.The descriptive statistical method was used to analyze the general situation,suicidal ideation,personality traits,and psychological resilience scores of detainees.χ2 test was used to compare the differences in demographic characteristics and other general conditions of suicidal ideation among prisoners.Binary Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the risk factors of suicidal ideation in detainees.Spearman correlations analysis was used to explore the correlations between suicidal ideation,personality traits,and psychological resilience of detainees.Multiple linear regression was used to investigate the mediating effect of psychological resilience on personality traits and suicidal ideation.Results:1.The suicidal ideation score ranged from 0 to 21.The incidence of suicidal ideation among detainees was 30.7%.2.The scores of psychoticism,neuroticism,intro-extroversion,and lie were 6.94±4.83,13.52±6.14,12.01±4.88,and 11.19±4.18 separately.The results showed that the scores of psychoticism（t=10.342）,neuroticism,（t=12.954）and intro-extroversion（t=13.286）of male detainees were higher than the national norm,and the differences were statistically significant（P<0.05）.The neuroticism（t=2.809）and intro-extroversion（t=6.758）scores of female detainees were higher than the national norm,and the differences were statistically significant（P<0.05）,the lie scores of male and female detainees were significantly lower than the national norm（t=-16.489 and-5.722,P<0.05）.3.The average score of the psychological resilience scale was55.75±21.97,lower than the national norm and the difference was statistically significant（t=-19.891,P<0.05）.4.Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that detainees with history of suicide attempt（OR=4.828,95%CI:3.533～6.598）,lacking warmth in family relationship（OR=1.877,95%CI:1.357～2.595）,unemployed（OR=1.600,95%CI:1.198～2.138）,with family misfortune recently（OR=1.503,95%CI:1.125～2.010）,dissatisfied with life（OR=1.465,95%CI:1.084～1.979）,with history of chronic disease（OR=1.402,95%CI:1.021～1.924）have higher incidence of suicidal ideation.5.Suicidal ideation was positively correlated with psychoticism（r_s=0.388）and neuroticism（r_s=0.581,P<0.01）scores of personality traits（P<0.01）,and was negatively correlated with intro-extroversion（r_s=-0.300）,lie scores（r_s=-0.216）,and psychological resilience（r_s=-0.460）（P<0.01）.Psychological resilience was positively correlated with intro-extroversion（r_s=0.375）and lie scores（r_s=0.148）of personality traits（P<0.01）,and was negatively correlated with psychoticism（r_s=-0.279）and neuroticism scores（r_s=-0.355）（P<0.01）.6.Psychological resilience plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between psychoticism,neuroticism,intro-extroversion,and suicidal ideation.The mediating effect value was 3.1%.Conclusion:1.The suicidal ideation level of detainees was higher and those who had a suicide attempt,lacked warmth in family relationships,were unemployed,had family misfortune recently,were dissatisfied with life,and had a history of chronic disease were more likely to have suicidal ideation.2.The personality traits of detainees are high psychoticism,high neuroticism,extroversion,and low concealment.3.The psychological resilience level of detainees was lower.4.Suicidal ideation of detainees is closely related to personality traits and psychological resilience.Suicidal ideation was positively correlated with psychoticism and neuroticism,and negatively correlated with intro-extroversion,concealment,and resilience.The higher the scores of psychoticism and neuroticism were,the stronger the suicidal ideation level was,the higher the scores of intro-extroversion,lie,and resilience was,the lower the suicidal ideation level was.Psychological resilience was positively correlated with intro-extroversion and lying,and negatively correlated with psychoticism and neuroticism.The higher the scores of detainees were,the higher the level of resilience was,the higher the scores of psychoticism and neuroticism were,and the lower the level of resilience was.5.Psychoticism,neuroticism,and intro-extroversion traits of detainees have direct and indirect effects on suicidal ideation.Psychological resilience plays a partially mediating role.
