ObjectivesThrough investigating the current status of the humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing,analyzing the key factors that affect their humanistic care ability,references are meant to provide for formulating effective intervention strategies and improving the humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing.MethodsA total of 649 students had been selected as survey subjects from three grades of nursing in a higher vocational college in Shandong Province from September 2019 to April 2021.Information had been acquired by the General Information Questionnaire,Caring Ability Inventory,Emotional Intelligence Scale,Nursing Professional Commitment Scale,the CFK School Climate Inventory and Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory.SPSS26.0 software was used for data statistical analyses.Results1.The total score of humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing was(186.49±22.48),including cognitive dimension score(72.74±10.95),courage dimension score(58.15±11.22),patience dimension score(56.26±8.56).The total score of humanistic care ability and scores of courage and patience dimensions were lower than the domestic norm,and the score of cognitive dimension was the same as that of the domestic norm.There were 176 people with low level of humanistic care,accounting for 27.12%;357 people with medium level,accounting for 55.01%;116 people with high level,accounting for 17.87%.2.Grades(F=20.284,P<0.001),whether participated in community activities(F=3.580,P=0.0004),father’s educational level(F=3.753,P=0.011),family health status(F=8.619,P<0.001),and the level of family care(F=9.434,P<0.001)affect the humanistic care ability among higher vocational students majoring in nursing.The scores for humanistic care ability of third-grade students majoring in nursing were higher than those of first and second-grade students majoring in nursing(P<0.001 or P=0.016),and their scores were increasing with their grades.The scores of humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing who participated in community activities were higher than that of those who did not(P=0.0004);The scores of humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing whose father’s educational level was high school or technical school were higher than those whose father’s educational level was elementary school and below(P=0.001);The scores of humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing whose father’s educational level was secondary school were higher than those whose father’s educational level was elementary school and below(P=0.015);The scores of humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing with better family health status were higher than those with good and general family health status(P<0.001 or P=0.0002);The scores of humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing with higher degree of family care were higher than those with high and low degree of family care(P<0.001);The scores of humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing with general degree of family care were higher than those with low degree of family care(P=0.048).3.The correlations of emotional intelligence,professional commitment,school environment,and critical thinking ability with humanistic care ability among higher vocational students majoring in nursing.The score of emotional intelligence of higher vocational students majoring in nursing was(133.45 ± 13.49)which was at a medium level,was positively correlated with its humanistic care ability score(r=0.488,P<0.001);The score of professional commitment was(85.03±14.76)which was at high but relatively lower level,was positively correlated with its humanistic care ability score(r=0.307,/P<0.001);The score of school environment was(68.45±9.67)which was at an upper middle level,was positively correlated with its humanistic care ability score(r=0.275,P<0.001);The score of critical thinking ability was(272.51±22.78)which was at a medium level,was positively correlated with its humanistic care ability score(r=0.392,P<0.001).4.Multiple linear regression analysis results:The influencing factors of the humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing were grade(second grade,third grade)(β=0.120,0.190,P=0.001,P<0.001),participation in community activities(β=0.116,P=0.0002),emotional intelligence(β=0.358,P<0.001),professional commitment(β=0.097,P=0.006),school environment(β=0.090,P=0.008),critical thinking ability(β=0.232,P<0.001).All above 6 variables explained 38.6%of the variance in the humanistic care ability among higher vocational students majoring in nursing(adjusted R2=0.386).Conclusions1.The humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing needs to be improved urgently.It is reminded that schools and hospitals should pay more attention to the cultivation of students’ humanistic care ability and take corresponding measures to improve their humanistic care ability.2.Higher vocational students majoring in nursing in senior grades and participating in community activities have a higher level of humanistic care ability.It is reminded that nursing educators can improve the humanistic care ability of nursing students by reinforcing humanistic care education and providing opportunities to participate in associations during their study in the program of higher vocational education.3.The emotional intelligence,professional commitment,school environment,and critical thinking ability positively affect humanistic care ability among higher vocational students majoring in nursing.Nursing educators can gradually improve the humanistic care ability of higher vocational students majoring in nursing by strengthening emotional intelligence education,improving professional commitment,providing a positive school humanistic environment and cultivating critical thinking ability.
