| During the World War II,the Japanese forces of aggression against China launched many biological warfare in China. The biological warfare troops, mainly Unit 731,had carried out a great deal of research on biological warfare in secret and formed relevant research results which were published in The Research Report on Epidemic Prevention of Army Medical School edited by the Tokyo Army Medical School. The Research Report on Epidemic Prevention of Army Medical School was the serial publications which was divided into two parts.PartⅡhad been declassified and only several pieces of paper of Part Ⅰ were found. The chief editor of The Research Report on Epidemic Prevention of Army Medical School Ⅱ was the commander of Unit 731,Shiro Ishii. There were about 900 original reports from 9volumes and only 796 of which existed in 8 volumes. With regard to the status of research on biological warfare in Unit 731,a comprehensive review came above from the past 30 years of research at home and abroad.Japanese scholars mainly focused on the investigation to the organization and internal activities of Uint 731.American scholars criticized the anti-humanity of Uint 731.Early studies by Chinese scholars focused on the collection of evidance of germ war prosecuted by Unit 731 on Chinese battlefield. In recent years, more and more research tends to explore the panorama of biological warfare. However,it was found that there was no systematic and comprehensive interpretation of the biological warfare research of Unit 731 from the perspective of original scientific reports. The thesis would have a retrospective view of biological warfare research of Unit 731 based on the interpretation to The Research Report on Epidemic Prevention of Army Medical School Ⅱ.As well as,the relationship between biological warfare research process and actions taken in Chinese battle field would be proclaimed.About 90% of the papers of The Research Report on Epidemic Prevention of Army Medical SchoolⅡwere presented in The Collection of Historical Materials of Japanese Biological Warfare published by the China Peace Press in 2015,totally 736 articles. The thesis made a detailed interpretation to the 736 reports,so as to make an in-depth study and analysis on the biological warfare research launched by Unit 731.Three aspects was included:1.Interpretation to The Research Report on Epidemic Prevention of Army Medical SchoolⅡ,including both text information and main contents.2.Case research: on one hand,The Research Report on Epidemic Prevention of Army Medical School Ⅱ volume 1 was taken as an example to interpret to the compilation form and content arrangement of the report;on the other hand, the research of the major bacteriological warfare agents such as plague, cholera, anthrax and glanders was taken as an example as well in order to analyze the study status of bacteriological warfare.3.Some questions such as the relationship between biological warfare research of Unit 731 and actions taken in China, the ethical issues involved in human experiments and the unresolved issues were involved. In conclusion,The Research Report on Epidemic Prevention of Army Medical School Ⅱ covered a wide range of research fields, including most of the research results of Japanese biological warfare from 1933 to 1944,the period from the beginning of biological warfare research to the end of the War.From the identity of the authors of and the organizations of the reports,it was clear that a variety of organizations were involved, such as universities from Japan and some units from China named as the Epidemic Prevention and Water Supply Organization. The research contents of the report covered a wide range of fields: on one hand, the following aspects of the bacteria such as the characteristics, toxicity, culture, laboratory inspection, identification, preservation, treatment, pathogenicity, prevention, sterilization and some others were studied, involving research field from microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, parasitology, infectious diseases, pathology and other disciplines;on the other hand, there were some other researches such as serums, vaccines, water filters, disinfection vehicles, military hygiene and personal hygiene research. There were about respectively 67,46,6 and 21 pieces of paper about the major bacteriological warfare agents such as plague, cholera, anthrax and glanders in The Research Report on Epidemic Prevention of Army Medical SchoolⅡand most of them were mainly on basic research.Especially, the cholera reseach involved a human experiment, some of the content of plague research were closely related to the human test report The “Q” Report. On the whole, all the aspects above belonged to the basic research of biological warfare. The Research Report on Epidemic Prevention of Army Medical School Ⅱcould reflect the research field, main contents, methods, achievements and research motivation of Japanese biological warfare research within a certain range of time. However,it could not show the whole aspects from basic research to the whole perspectives of defensive and offensive biological warfare research.Thereafter, much more data should be declassified and interpreted. |
