| Gaochang placed an very important role in the historic management by Chinese Nationality of Xiyu.It is now the largest ancient capital city that has been kept in comparatively good shape in Xinjing province.Its protection started from the year 2005 and is approaching an end of the 1st phase.As a phase summary of "Ancient City of Gaochang site protection research", this piece of paper focuses on geographical environment, historical features, preservation status, major corrosion and soil protection technology of Gaochang city, with down- to- the- earth investigation conducted.On which a 3 steps theory composed of principles, methods, techniques has been set up, which can also be applicable and can be extended to Soil site protection in the arid regions of Northwest ChinaPaper point of views are:(1)XiYu is the extension of Chinese civilization, the Indian civilization, the Arab civilization and Western civilization, and the land of the intersection ,in human history.The Ancient City of Gaochang is witnessed which is the Chinese nation managed XiYu, by 1400 years. Gaochang is a unique location which is the gateway to the XiYu and the crossroads of the ancient Silk Road. And Gaochang is also very important witnessed the process of Learning Buddhism from West to East, with irreplaceable historical value, artistic value and human value.(2)Gaochang is rich in historical remains, on which a qualitative classification can tell a macro mastery of the remains, thus targeted exploration and appraisal can be conducted.The "remnants" inside of the site is the key part of protection, which needs to be subclassified according to remnants type (classification) and the constructoin methods, historical maintenance measures,etc. So that targeted protection measures can be proposed.(3)Natural corrosions classified according to modes of action, more clearly reflects the effects of various combinations of different factors influencing the destruction by three levels. The damages reflect the extent of corrosion, failure mode and damage development, which can provide guidance for the protection and offer understanding and mastery of the macroscopic corrosion. (4) Ellemination of the possible collapse is the core work in site protection, site stability verification is the important basis for site protection.
