Study On Chinese And Western Cultural Blending In Movies From The Perspective Of Value Dimensions

With the increasingly rapid development of globalization, intercultural communication has been gaining more attention. As the core of intercultural communication study, cultural values directly influence the process and the results of communication. Different cultural backgrounds take on different cultural values. So are with Chinese and Western cultural values. When admitting such differences, we should take the dynamic features of cultural values into consideration and give emphasis on the developing trend of Chinese and Western cultural values at the same time. This thesis makes an analysis on the cultural value orientations of the blending of Chinese and Western cultures in the light of five value dimensions developed by Dutch social psychologist Geert Hofstede.Language, as a part of culture and the carrier of culture, plays an irreplaceable role in the process of recording cultural achievement, inheriting cultural thoughts. Languages are influenced by culture and are engraved with the marks of culture. It can unintentionally show and embody the ideology, world outlook, and values of a society, a nation, a region or a country concretely. The culture of a nation’s, naturally including the nation’s language, used to express feelings and information exchange, while now it is the main media of transmitting culture. Therefore, from the contact of Chinese and western language, the conflict of Chinese and western culture, the collision and integration of these different cultures are bound to happen. Only in the process of Chinese culture and western culture communication, conflict, collision and integration, can we have a more profound understanding from our national culture and other ethnic groups and culture, and find the best point of Chinese and western culture, so that they can learn complementary advantages from each other and construct the harmonious culture together. In the process of communication, we should obtain more nutrition from each other, absorb more cultural knowledge and enrich our connotation. By the frequent contact of our native language and other nations’languages, we can not only keep equal status with other languages, but also strengthen our expressive function greatly. For the cultural blending happened only on the basis of communication between people from China and the west, different cultures cannot be understood as the mutual replacement of language and culture, more profound implication cannot be seen as the hybrid mixture of different languages and cultures. It is safe for us to believe that cultural blending should be reflected in the development of people’s cultural horizon. In the commentary relationship between Chinese and western culture, whether the idea of western culture takes the place of Chinese culture, or advocates Chinese culture dominating the future world, in fact, we are expecting to use a kind of culture to take the place of another. However, as the core content of culture is concerned, this phenomenon can not take place in any society. From the surface or effectiveness level of a culture, it is diverse, variable and replaceable, while from the deep or value belief level of the culture, it is deeply rooted and difficult to replace.This paper tends to analyze the phenomenon of cultural blending between Chinese and western cultures based on value dimensions proposed by Hofstede. According to the differences between Chinese and western cultures, on the one hand, we should absorb a large amount of advanced, beneficial and essential component from the western language and culture to enrich and develop our native language and culture; on the other hand, it is necessary for us to have enough flair and immunity, penetrating and abandoning the backward, unprofitable, junk thing so as to maintain the purity of our national language and cultural tradition. Since cultural blending is the bidirectional interaction, we could find their own cultural boundary and limitations based on the dialogue between Chinese and western culture; also we have the duty to try to expand their cultural sight based on our own culture because this is a kind of recycle dialogue process. Exposed to too much western culture, in fact, in the conversion between Chinese culture and western culture, and from the answer of western culture, we have to ask questions from our own cultural tradition, and further force us to answer them in a new way, so as to produce new understanding and make new interpretation with regards to other cultures. In the process of asking and answering, we realized the expansion of cultural perspective with great innovation. Therefore, Chinese and western cultural blending is a constant process of reading culture from each other, and it is also a constant process to re-examine the process of reconciliation regarding to their own cultural tradition. We should not only inherit and develop traditional culture in the rational core of absorbing and drawing lessons from western culture of modern spirits, but also absorb the advanced perception, technology, and some other good aspects, adapting ourselves to the global development with the rapid development of the times.
