The first collection of Sanyan,Yushi Mingyan also known as Stories Old and New,was a prelude to the golden age of Chinese ancient vernacular short stories, having a profound influence on the literature of later age.Yet taking a panoramic view of the domestic and foreign researches, few were on the translation study of Yushi Mingyan, let alone appellations within it.The paper has selected the complete English version of Yushi Mingyan by Yang Shuhui and Yang Yunqin along with the abridged versions of Cyril Birch as well as Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang to analyze on the basis of functionalist approach theory, discourse analysis theory and translation strategies domestication and foreignization. The appellations in the paper are categorized into kinship appellations, fictive kinship appellations and social appellations, all of which will undergo textual analyses with an illustration of representative examples. An conclusion is drawn out that a good English version of appellations should match the intention of the author with the expectancy of readers as well as convey the cultural connotation within the appellations.Generally speaking,Yang Shuhui and Yang Yunqin rendered the appellations in an accurate, smooth and appealing way and have helped disseminate Chinese culture within the appellations.Yet there are still some mistranslations which require revisions so as to guarantee the target readers a better understanding of Chinese appellation culture.
