Flexibility Or Betrayal-Study On Zheng Zhenduo’s Translation Theory And Practice From The Perspective Of Faithfulness

Zheng zhenduo(1898-1958)was a pioneering scholar in the May Fourth New Literature Movement.He made great achievements in literature,art history,folklore and archaeology,and he was also a prominent translator.Since the May Fourth Movement,Zheng Zhenduo translated lots of Russian,Indian,Greek and Roman literary works,and made great contribution in the ideological emancipation and the development of the literary translation in China.Zheng Zhenduo provided relatively mature viewpoints for long-time disputable issues on translation.He was the first translator who introduced Tytler’s "three principles of translation",and emphasized that translation must be faithful to the original text in the content.Besides,he demonstrated the translatability of literature works,called on the unification of the literary terms,advocated the Europeanization of language,further discussed the translator’s responsibility and commented the contemporary history of literary translation in China.His translation thoughts provided guidelines for the construction of translation theories at his time.At last,through collecting and analyzing as many documents and literature material as possible,this thesis studies Zheng Zhenduo’s translation activities,summarizes his translation thoughts,expounds the superiority of his translation thoughts by discussing the overlapping points of his translation views and modern western mainstream translation theory.The thesis also explores and analyzes the manifestation of his translation theory in his translation practice from the perspective of faithfulness by taking Stray Birds and The Crescent Moon as examples.The research on Zheng Zhenduo’s translation practice and translation views highlights that his translation theories not only did work at his time but remain convincingly operational today.
