| Koguryo relics and tombs, located in Ji’an city,Jilin Province,China, are a world cultural heritage.38 of the tombs were decorated with informative and diversified murals. Those murals have sustained heavy damages because of prolonged exposure to high humidity and sudden environmental changes caused by excavation. The murals now suffer from a series of damages:weathering of foundation rock, erosion by moss and lichen, extensive delamination and falling off of base layer, disruption of base layer, melting, powdering, cracking, flaking, falling off of the pigment layer, crystallization of soluble salt and calcium on pigment layer, and mold attack on the pigment layer. These damages resulted from a combination of factors including precipitation, groundwater, condensed water, temperature, high humidity, and visits of audience. These damages reduce the cultural value of the murals and endanger the preservation of them, which imposes a serious impact to the research of the murals. Therefore, protection of the murals is a systematic and multidisciplinary work, which requires professional and prolonged research. This thesis consists of three parts:introduction, body, and conclusion.Chapter one,the introduction, explains the purpose and significance of this study, research trends in academia, and research methods and innovation of the study. The second, third, and fourth chapters are the body of this thesis. The second chapter, argument foundation of the study, elaborates the discovery, investigation, and location of the Koguryo tomb murals and analyzes value of the murals.Chapter three is about comparative analysis of the site protection of murals at China and abroad, aiming at enhancing the protection of the Koguryo tomb murals. The fourth chapter includes in-depth analysis of the status quo of the protection of the Koguryo tomb murals, and the damaging factors to the murals. The fifth chapter examines current problems in the protection of the murals, and proposes suggestions for better protection. The sixth chapter is the conclusion of this study. |
