A Report On The Translation Of English Financial News From The Economist Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

As the global economy is developing in a fast pace,economic exchanges and cooperation between countries are becoming more frequent.Financial news reports have become an important means for people to get the latest economic information.Therefore,in order to improve the translation quality of English financial news,it is necessary to study the linguistic features and translation strategies of such news.English financial news belongs to informative texts,and the main purpose of English financial news translation is to provide latest financial information for Chinese readers.In terms of lexicon,there are a large number of professional terms,proper nouns,and polysemous words in English financial news.As for syntax,English financial news employs a large number of complex sentences,as well as many comparative sentences.Moreover,passive voice is widely used in English financial news.Guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory,this paper explores the translation methods of English financial news.Nida’s functional equivalence theory holds that translation reproduces the information of the source language with the closest and most natural equivalence,so that the response of the target text readers to the target text is consistent with the response of the source text readers.The theory emphasizes equivalence on content rather than on form,which has a great guiding significance for the translation of English financial news.The translation practice report is based on nine pieces of English financial news reports from the financial column of The Economist.It analyzes the characteristics of financial news in terms of lexicon and syntax,and explores the difficulties and solutions in the translation of English financial news based on Nida’s functional equivalence theory.In terms of vocabulary,the author adopts literal translation to deal with financial terms;literal translation with footnotes to deal with proper nouns,free translation and the extension of word meaning to tackle polysemous words.In terms of syntax,the author adopts methods such as inversion,division,and addition to translate complex sentences;and the comparisons of multiple expressions could be translated as“A的大小(长度,重量……)是B的N倍”;For the passive voice,the author mainly adopts the voice conversion method,translates the passive voice into the active one and adds an indefinite subject,or keeps the passive voice unchanged.Based on the analysis of the linguistic features of English financial news at the lexicon and syntax levels,this paper summarizes the specific translation methods and experiences of English financial news through some examples in the translation practice.The purpose of this paper is to provide some valuable references for translators engaged in financial news translation,so as to improve the quality of financial news translation.
