| Text is the basic unit of translation, and cohesion is one of the main parts of text.In English-Chinese prose translation, due to the differences in structure, language characteristics between two languages, cohesive devices cannot be always translated equivalently. Moreover, the effective use of cohesive devices is of significance to semantic coherence and completeness.Based on the English-Chinese translation of two chapters in A Shepherd’s Life, and from the perspective of cohesion theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan, this thesis analyzes the non-equivalent translation of grammatical cohesion(reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction included)and lexical reiteration, and then discusses the appropriate translation strategies to deal with cohesion differences between English and Chinese prose. The translation report is divided into five parts.Chapter One is the task description.Chapter Two is the theoretical basis.Chapter Three is the translation process.Chapter Four is the case analysis. And from four grammatical cohesive devices and lexical reiteration, this chapter specifically analyzes the translation strategies of these five cohesive devices. In translation practice, reference can be omitted and transformed into another type of reference or lexical cohesion;substitution is often translated into lexical cohesion;in terms of ellipsis, the strategy of amplification is often used in English-Chinese prose translation;in the case of lexical reiteration,it should be translated according to the specific contexts.Chapter Five is the conclusion of the report. |
