Research On Lefebvre’s The Production Of Space

Henri Lefebvre put forward ’the production of space’ in 1970s,it provides a spatial perspective for analyzing contemporary social problems.With the deepening of Chinese urbanization,it is of great theoretical and practical significance to carry out research on ’the production of space’.Based on texts such as The Production of Space,The Urban Revolution and Space and Politics,combined with the historical and theoretical background,this paper outlines main contents of ’the production of space’;reveals the crisis of the capitalization of ’the production of space’from the perspective of the relationship between capital and ’the production of space’,describes the approaches to make the belief of ’the production of space’come true;and analyzes the historical materialism characteristics of’the production of space’.Firstly,this paper illustrates the backgrounds and main contents of ’the production of space’.It was born in the period of rapid urbanization in France,and was directly related to the spread of Marxism in France as well as the division in France ideological circle.Lefebvre started his own theoretical construction on the basis of absorbing the social critical theory of Marx,Debord and Nietzsche.Space not only has the meaning of a container or place,but also has the meaning of social practice.Through the triple dialectic of space,social space spans the material world,the spiritual world and the social field.On the whole,the production mode of space has changed from‘the production in space’to‘the production of space’,but‘the production in space’has not disappeared,so ’the production of space’is nothing but the enrichment and development of material production.Secondly,this paper focuses on analyzing the relationship between ’the production of space’ and capital.Capital and ’the production of space’ follow different logics,the nature of capital lies in realizing its maximum increment,and ’the production of space’ takes human development as its ultimate value.’The production of space’ is moving towards globalization and urbanization in the rapid expansion of capital,and capital is moving towards spatialization and consumerization with the participation of ’the production of space’.The combination of ’the production of space’ and capital brings great developments to both of them,but the contradictions between the two cannot be covered.In the process of capitalization of ’the production of space’,capital keeps ’the production of space’ away from the real needs of human,and leads to symbolization of everyday life.In addition,space fetishism is the deepening of capitalization of ’the production of space’.Space fetishism is an enormous symbol system that shields the real world and makes people lose the ability to reflect.The contradictions arising from the capitalization of ’the production of space’ need to be resolved through total revolution,to be more specific,the revolution of everyday life and spatial revolution.Festivals and leisure activities liberate people from stereotyped everyday life into a total person,spatial revolution constructs differential justice and created the ideal differential space.Finally,this paper analyzes the historical materialism characteristics of Lefebvre’s ’the production of space’.First of all,it broadens the theoretical perspective of historical materialism;In the second place,it gives play to the theoretical quality of caring for reality;Last but not least,it improves Marx’s criticism of capitalism.There is no doubt that Lefebvre’s ’the production of space’ has significance for the process of Chinese urbanization.
