| Among the three keys of language learning(phonetics, vocabulary, grammar),vocabulary learning plays an important role and is the basis which decides whether a language can be successfully mastered.Currently,in primary school, vocabulary learning in traditional English class is often restricted to mechanical memory where students memorize vocabularies by notes, and the learning performance is frustrating. Therefore,it is necessary to find an efficient way to help pupils remember English vocabularies. The application of Lexical Chunk memory provides another practical and feasible idea for vocabulary learning. The Lexical Chunk memory expands the scope to fixed phrases, sentences, and other aspects rather than a traditional mechanical method that learners reads and writes vocabularies repeatedly to memorize English vocabularies. The paper aims to answer the following questions: 1)Does Lexical Chunk memory help students remember English vocabularies in practice? 2)What are the problems in the application of Lexical Chunk memory, and what problems need to be noted? The author takes the students of two classes in Grade four,J Primary School in T City as the researched object and conducts the 14-week experiment. The experimental group adopts the lexical chunk memory to recognize and memorize English vocabularies, while the controlled group uses the traditional memory method without too much emphasis on the lexical chunk. At the end of the semester, the vocabulary spelling test was arranged to test the students’ memory performances, and the students’ performances were used for comparative analysis. Finally, based on the results from the experiment,6 students with different learning performances were selected for interviews and the results were summarized. The results of the research show that the application of lexical chunk memory to memorize English vocabularies certainly has a positive effect on the improvement of English vocabulary memory of primary school learners. However, the lexical chunk memory still has various drawbacks such as the big capacity of lexical chunks, the difficulty to reasonably organize vocabularies into chunks and the difficulty to extract memorized chunks in the process of application. For the above problems, combined with the practical needs of primary school students, the author recommends: 1.Teachers should pay attention to vocabulary learning and increase training on students’ lexical chunks memory;2.students should pay attention to the application of language learningand adopt lexical chunk to memorize vocabularies. |
