The teaching and research activities of middle school English have gone through more than 40 years in our country.This kind of teaching and research system has promoted not only the stability and improvement of the basic level of education and teaching,also the continuous growth of English teachers by summing up and popularizing teaching experience,interpreting courses and teaching materials,and carrying out teaching research and experiments.The new situation and new changes of basic education in China have put forward new requirements for English teaching,and the teaching and research activities of English subject is also facing new challenges.In order that the teaching and research activities of English subject in middle school of Zhengzhou can serve teaching well,it is necessary to understand the current situation of the teaching and research activities of English subject in Zhengzhou,the existing problems in them,and find out how to solve them.This paper mainly adopts a questionnaire survey,supplemented by an interview to carry on the research.Through the distribution of questionnaires,more than 3700 junior middle school English teachers in 13 counties(cities)districts of Zhengzhou City participated in English teaching and research activities.Through the statistics and analysis of the survey results,the main problems of English teaching and research activities in middle schools are: there are obvious differences in the basic situation of middle school English teachers;the main role of middle school English teachers in teaching and research activities is not reflected;middle school English teaching and research activities have limitations in content and form;middle school English teachers have deviations in their understanding of English teaching and research activities due to different regions,titles and teaching ages;middle school English teachers need to improve their own requirements;middle school English teaching and research activities are influenced by excellent teachers’ guidance,teaching and research atmosphere and school support.Through the analysis of the reasons,the main conclusions are as follows: the development of basic education among regions is not balanced;the English teaching and research activities in middle schools lack a clear system guarantee from top to bottom;the English teaching and research activities in middle schools are lack of scientific and systematic planning;the English teaching and research activities in middle schools do not pay attention to the needs of different groups;teachers’ plans for lifelong learning and their own professional development are insufficient;and the support of teaching and research departments and schools has a positive impact on teachers’ participation in English teaching and research activities.Based on the conclusions of the survey,the paper finally proposes possible ways to improve the English teaching and research activities in middle school from the four levels,ranging from the national macro-level,Zhengzhou Teaching and Research Institute,to schools,and individual teachers.The possible ways include provision of institutional safeguards and professional improvement of teaching and research staff,creating an integrated teaching-research-training model,providing internal guarantees for teaching and research activities,and simulating teachers’ internal driving force for professional development.
