This is a report on the translation of The New Ecology:Rethinking a Science for the Anthropocene,a work of popular science about ecology written by Oswald J.Schmitz,a professor in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies of Yale University. This book explains to a broad readership that ecology is a science devoted to studying the mysteries of the natural world.Chapter 2(Valuing Species and Ecosystems)and Chapter 3(Biological Diversity and Ecosystem Functions)are chosen as the source text of the translation project. In these two chapters, the author endeavors to explain why different species exist in different geographic locations across the globe, why some are highly abundant and others not,and how environmental conditions and their interactions with each other control the functioning of ecosystems. This translation report consists of four chapters, namely the description, process description, case analysis and summary. The first chapter describes the background of the project,an introduction to the source text, and the significance of the task. The second chapter mainly clarifies the translation process, including pre-translation preparation, difficulties in translation and post-translation modification. The third chapter presents case analysis. The translator selects typical translation examples to illustrate how she, under the guidance of eco-translatology,has tackled the translation difficulties by adopting a variety of translation techniques such as combination, division, addition and conversion.Gains and lessons in the translation process are summarized in chapter four.
